NextGen Takes Off in Queensland

The inaugural meeting of NextGen in Queensland was held at Cedar Glen Nursery on Saturday 10th November. A group of enthusiastic young people met to hear guest speaker Jerry Coleby-Williams.

Jerry, a presenter on ABC Gardening TV, spoke about his love of the industry and how he became involved. His story about his childhood included some interesting insights into the importance of gardening in the UK during and after the war. His childhood shaped his views on sustainable gardening, something which he is very passionate about and always willing to share his views on.

Presentations were followed with a BBQ lunch prepared by the team at Cedar Glen. Nursery owner Martin Hickey then led the group through a tour of the nursery. Our thanks to all those who helped out on the day. Most importantly, this initiative has been the result of a lot of hard work from Clair Levander of Cedar Glen, who was the QLD Young Leader 2006. NGIQ appreciates Clair’s efforts and thank her for her contribution to the future of the industry. Clair has been the driving force in getting the group up and running but due to other work commitments (and that she is getting too old!!!) she is encouraging others to take up the challenge of driving NextGen. We are looking for more people to be involved in the committee and become members of the group. Being involved is a chance to gain experience in a committee environment and is an excellent stepping stone to serving on other industry bodies and a great way to enhance your CV!

Become a part of NextGen

Encouraging involvement of young people in the industry is a sign of a healthy industry planning for succession. NextGen is a group set up to educate and create a sense of belonging for young people aged 35 years or younger. There will be regular gatherings to meet other young people in the industry, to learn how other organisations operate, hear from industry-experienced speakers and generally socialize with other young people in the industry.

To be involved in the committee or become a member of the group, simply email sharon@ngiq.asn.au with your name, address, personal email address, etc. You will be on the mailing list to receive information on social events and meetings.
